London Supper Club: December 2023

“The whole vibe was really cool – like some grand but wholesome homely dinner that only exists in books and films.”

What a weekend we had at the Museum of the Home in December.

This was the first time we’d ventured outside Dom & Emma’s flat and boy did it pay off. The Georgian Suite married grandeur and intimacy, while the Saturday night drinks reception in the museum’s chapel will live long in the memory.

Candidly speaking, we’d been nervous about the event. Initially anxious that no one would sign up and we’d lose the deposit, the opposite reality presented new challenges.

Forty four guests (!) went far beyond our previous high of sixteen and quickly fears arose with a small, unfamiliar kitchen, a brand new team, and what was beginning to feel like an overly ambitious menu.

There was, it turns out, no reason to worry.

Hunting down several cases of Amber’s wine on Friday afternoon aside (it had been delivered to a Chinese restaurant 500m down the road), these weren’t just the biggest, but arguably the most enjoyable events we’ve produced.

The menu was littered with highlights with feedback particularly glowing for the radish meringues, the three day pork belly, and the poached pears with that blue cheese ice cream. Several of you asked for the recipe. Here it is.

“Friendly yet elevated. You blew my expectations out of the water!”

Having Andrew join us from Amman was very special. What he, Haya, Sunny, and Sameer have built in Jordan is extraordinary and to have him bring his maitre d’ skills to us was a privilege.

Above all, thank you to everyone who joined us. You were an exceptional crowd, full of appreciation for the food, the wine, the location and all those candles. You make the events what they are and we’re lucky to have such a warm, appreciative, and fun-loving community.

Perhaps the most unusual dish of the night was the Nettle Soup with Durrus Cheese & Nutmeg. Dom learned of nettles’ extraordinary health benefits in Ireland and was determined to share these in London. The nettles (foraged by Dom in London) were turned into a light stock then poured over diced Durrus cheese (personally imported by Dom) and finished some grated nutmeg.

The mainer was a feat of Lamb, Carrots & Herbs. Leg of lamb from Turner & George was marinaded, butterflied, and barbecued while shoulder was slow-cooked for 12 hours before being rolled into  breadcrumbed bon bons. These were accompanied by a silky smooth carrot and orange purée, baby carrots roasted in lamb fat, a parsley and anchovy pesto, and homemade mint jellies.

Thought it was excellent from start to finish – great location, delicious and interesting food, hilarious chat, nice wine (particularly the first red) and overall great value for money.

To wrap up, we served a beautiful Rhubarb & Orange Pavlova with Earl Grey Ice Cream. The Taroocco oranges, once again from Salvatore in Palagonia, were to die for.

The wine pairings from Amber Gardner were, as ever, a complete knock out.
